Today is the day Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Civil Rights activist, and torch-bearer for Humanity; Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. His, "I have a Dream", speech being one of the most popular speeches in our American history, called out to each one of our Souls who stand for Equality. That is just one of the many heart invoking, mind-opening, and illuminating speeches he made in his short, yet powerful and meaningful life. His speech on the Vietnam War, is another one that must be shared. If you haven't, then please take the time today to read it or listen to it. Honor his journey for Peace and his life's commitment. Two hours or even a full hour-hardly anything. I know all of us come from different places. Our blessings may come in different forms and our upbringings and past are all varied and mixed up. But there is one thing that rings true, regardless of anything: there is always someone who has less than you or is struggling more than you. I guess, what I am trying to blurt out is, if you think you have challenges to meet, then just stop and evaluate it, are there greater struggles in others' lives? How blessed are you really? Are you in a good position to help? Two hours are nothing. Research your faith based group, your local food shelter, Women's Home, or help with Peace campaigning via Amnesty International. There are thousands of people in your zip code right now giving time to and support those who are helping the greater good. Non-profits thrive on your good intentions and time. Don't talk about it, just do it. Silently or then share it and enlist the help of your friends too. -Farida

Practice generosity by sharing time, energy and material resources. Clean out your closet, bureau, or garage. Give away what you no longer need.

Might I add, your trash maybe someone's treasure. Key word "treasure". Don't give away clothes or shoes you would not wear yourself. For example: torn, bleached, burned or falling apart. What you may not deem fashionable and is in GOOD quality can be of great help to a struggling person trying to land a job. Please remember, people fall on hard times, but they do not lose dignity or self-respect. Respect that. -Farida

51. Advocacy:
Every action for peace requires someone to exhibit the courage to challenge violence and inspire love. Today, be an ally. Without blaming or judging others, speak out for those who are disrespected.

We are familiar with the monumental change people like Gandhi and Martin Luther King have made for millions of people. They were brave. But, there are also everyday heroes whose names we do not know. The Doctors who volunteer their time in inner city clinics, or the Structural Engineers who donate their plans for a Watering well in a dry barren country, the Teacher who gives hope to troubled youth, the Young students that host a clothing drive, the Couple that goes grocery shopping for a needy family, the Woman who never had grandparents; who pays a visit every week to the Senior home, and even the social Worker who moonlights as a Children's Advocate. Mentors and Parents who empower children to do good and love humanity--you are appreciated too. -Farida

50. Respect:
Be aware of today of "jokes" or remarks that show disrespect toward groups, sexes, classes of people, religions. Be considerate of every person's dignity, and choose not to participate in disrespectful conversations.

I think some of us have encountered a similar situation: I have walked into rooms of familiar faces who claim not to be racist, but then use racial slurs and racial profiling fostering stereotypes in a jovial manner. I have made a face, walked out of the room and even said, " I don't think the use of that word is funny." I have explained my reasons. I have been labeled a naive tree hugger who doesn't have a sense of humor. "Lighten up." I walk out of that room, and I never enter a group of such people again. Words bite and words love. Choose your words carefully. Words and certain words especially, have history of inhumanity behind them. What you say comes from what you think. enough said. -Farida

48. Ecology:
Value the Earth by conserving natural resources and practicing recycling. Today use or purchase recycled products.

Thank God for the Conservation Society, Sierra Club and National Parks. I often wonder, if we don't stop now and conserve, what do we have to live for in our old age. I know we always talk about conservation in regards to our "future generations", but that future slant often lends to procrastination. I am concerned with now. What are you doing every day to be a better Steward of the Earth and it's inhabitants? Are you still using styrofoam? Do you collect old papers and cans to recycle? Do you opt for minimal packing? Do you reuse items and containers? Do you use plastic bags or a cloth bag? How much water and energy are you wasting everyday? Conservation is not another word for frugal or cheap. It is about MINDFUL living. Do you litter? Oh the list goes on... -Farida

47. Disarmament:
Have a conversation with someone today about what the world be like if there were no weapons nor any need for them. Imagine such a world.

I think we believe this world is safer with the collective "Us" being protected by weapon carrying Individuals or countries. Sadly, it is the catalyst for violence. They are readily available for the dark of mind to carry out out their ruthless agenda. What has the nuclear bomb brought us? Other than fear, death and mad men? Do I believe in a Utopia where weapons do not exist and we talk to one another about our grievances? I cannot say, since in some ways the Military protects us. So my personal belief is, the presence is enough to ward off negative intentions and threats--can we just keep it at that? I don't know. That is my honest feeling. -Farida

When your plans seem delayed, choose to be patient by identifying at least 3 ways that you can constructively use this time to support your goal.

Luckily, I don't find myself in such binds these days. I think it's because I am working on being a better time manager. But, I have found myself in instances when time just dragged on. Perpetual waiting can be a downer. So, three ways I have found to be time efficient in supporting patience; 1. reading a reference book. Right now I have pocket book filled with philosophy. 2. Lists help me feel organized. So why not use that time to plan your week or your next projects. 3. If it's a place where you can use your phone, why not call a friend back that you have been meaning too. -Farida

Appreciation helps people grow. Offer praise to at least 3 people today for their personal qualities, achievements, or helpful service.

Go-getters, self-motivated types, usually don't seek out praise or approval of others. They rely on their own sense of knowing and confidence. But it doesn't hurt to hear a few words of kindness. How long does it take to make someone's day? A few words to recognize their good work, talents, or acts, is a morale booster. Make amends today. Apologize to someone you may have hurt and mean your apology sincerely.

For me it's important to keep me in mind, that all of us are here for an "x" amount of time. There is not time better than now to mend a bad relationship. It's take a strong person to extend a hand of friendship and apologize. Worst case scenario, the person might not acknowledge your apology. At least you have the benefit of knowing you tried. 29. Forgiveness
There are more important things than remembering a hurt. Write a letter to forgive someone and move on with life. You do not have to mail the letter.

Nothing is more liberating than forgiving someone who has hurt you or hurts in general that have come into your life. By forgiving your hurt, you are detaching yourself from negative. You are able to move on freely and start with a clean slate. It is indeed hard to forget, but when you reach a place of forgiveness, even the smallest amount of compassion in your heart blossoms into strength. I forgive all the people or institutions, groups or experiences that have done me wrong. -Farida

Today, stop what you are doing and take 5 minutes to listen to the feelings behind someone’s words to you. Be fully present for the conversation and show interest in what the person is saying.

Especially when they are reaching out to you for comfort or advice. In order to feel the message, you have to focus on the person, without being self involved. Sometimes, we can get into patterns of enjoying the sound of our voice. We have no idea what we are saying, and continue to talk. By pausing and letting the other person speak freely, we might tune into a greater message that will help us in the future. 23. Prayer:
“Prayer from the heart can achieve what nothing else in the world can,” said Gandhi. Begin and end the day with a prayer for peace. Let peace begin with you.

My first prayer of the day is at Fajr time; before sunrise. I try my best to make Fajr prayers. [even though it is a challenge for me-honestly.]I know if I make prayer at the start of the day, I feel more centered. I also feel when I begin my day with prayer, I have started my day with recognizing all the blessings Allah has blessed me with. I have also sought guidance. I pray for peace in all of the world. From Pakistan, Middle East to Africa and America.

Write down what you want to "stand for" in life. Note at least one way you can show through your action that you stand for your beliefs. Take action.

21. Inspiration:
Think of at least two people who exemplify the practice of nonviolence. What is it you admire about them? Practice these behaviors today so that other people may be inspired.

I have a Mentor who has inspired me beyond words. She walks the talk, and she leads by example. She is a modest and humble person. She is good for her word. If there is something she cannot do, she will find someone else to help. She is also very balanced in her life. She has been blessed with love, career, and a beautiful life. She is a positive person who works for people who have been through traumatic times. Her ability to smile and provide a secure shoulder to cry on, to those people floors me. She is just one of many people I have met in my life that have opened the door to social work and peace. Thank You my Amnesty International Friend :)Farida

20. Self-forgiveness:
Knowing that who you are is greater than what you have done or not done, have or don't have, today forgive yourself for forgetting the good that is YOU.

19. Acceptance:

Take a leadership role today in your life. Find one way you can be more expressive of who you truly are.
