New Music: Kings of Convenience Back from Hiatus

Icy, Mellow, Whisper Rock, heart pulling melodies, are just a few thoughts that come to mind about Norwegian artists, Kings of Convenience. I discovered  Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe almost 8 years ago, and treasure the albums, remixes, collaboration and even their solo genius. I love them that much. I cannot imagine my music library without their calming vocals.

"I Don't Know What I Can Save You From", is one of my all time favorite songs.

Finally, they are back with a new album, "Declaration of Dependence". I am giddy, I am happy, and I knew it all along; they would not disappoint. Kings of Convenience fit into my nostalgia space; along with Smashing Pumpkins, Massive Attack and PJ Harvey. These artists provided background music for my modest creative beginnings. How can I say anything bad. They share their genius. I am a fan. I am a writer, who is inspired. Okay, I will stop this over flowing of emotions. (end.)

Pretty simple message? Nothing brings me more joy than Discovery Channel's, "Planet Earth" series narrated by Sigourney Weaver. I have probably watched it a million times now. Nothing feels better than being in the flow of things again. Thoughts moving, free-falling, connecting and taking broad strides. The beauty of the composition. The thrill of completion. Let's hope I can continue this wave. If you have been following this sea creature, then you have noticed I have been holding words back and pouring out tunes for you lovely people. This is how I transition. Not cut and dry, but rather mm by mm, at my own pace. So here is another piece to add to the "Get Inspired" music collection on this ambitious blog. ;)

Hands down, U2 has staying power. Their new album, No Line on the Horizon, is absolutely smashing. It's not Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby. (my U2 tops) I don't know why it took me ages to post this online for you all. Oh wait, I know. (tsk tsk).

The lyrics are gorgeous. The songs are signature meta-. Or according to Bono,

"Lifeforce, joy, innovation, emotional honesty, analogue not digital, home-made not pro-tooled, unique sonic landscape."

This album is a long drive companion. Remove the ear piece, turn of the cell, crank up the volume, open windows (or sunroof, convertible top), and coast.

Ear Candy: Apparat

Instead of calling this post Ear Candy, I should call it eerie candy. not.
c'mon now it's oktoburr. "Hailin' from the edge"is an icy cold song. Not sure if the lyrics make any sense, but sometimes, you just wanna listen to something because it's pretty, or in this case, pretty-ugly  not fully ugly, but pretty]. Sascha Ring is the sexy German behind this song. He is widely known as Apparat. Apparat can be type cast as ambient music. He is more into atmospheric moods. But you can find traces of electronica in his musicDNA.

Ear Candy: NEW Franz Ferdinand!

Did you see the exclamation in the headline? That's how elated I am. Franz Ferdinand is seriously one of my all time favorite bands. Almost four years ago on my birthday one of my dear friends treated me to their concert in Houston. I was hooked.  They are great live band, and gosh who doesn't love those guitar notes that make you shake your hips and jump for joy. Oh my my my. Their new single is called, "Lucid Dreams", will soon be on your ipod/mp3 player. I just know it. It's the Franz we love.

Massive Attack was undoubtedly one of my constant companions in College. Their music was political, complex, and trip hypnotic. The video for "Karmacoma" plays like an art house indie flick with political undertones.

For this song Massive Attack collaborated with Tricky. I love the eastern beat and jamaican bass line. Interesting Video. Check it out HERE.

I love Zoot Woman. It's like the extra equal packet in my coffee on some mornings. Yes, their genre of music is not typical of my style, but it is a nice change in my playlist. The song is simple. The video artsy.

Hello August 2008

It was a beautiful day. Don't let it get away. Beautiful day..

Good Morning August 2008! Can't believe you came so fast. What does this mean?

1. You have 4 months to renew, rededicate and revitalize your goals for 2008.

2. You have 4 months to make this year a good year for yourself. (granted time lines are subjective to each one)

3. You have TODAY to make a change for the better. A positive change for yourself, and everything around you. Only you know what that is, and only YOU know how to get there. Even a small step is a step towards the right direction.

4. Channel all your creative ideas, goals, inner strength to make that change. If you don't think you need a positive change in any aspect of your life, then big kudos to you. Share your insight with us! :)

5. De-clutter and detox. Purge all the unnecessary fragments of your life. Get rid of whatever or (for some, who ever holds you back). Simplify your life and streamline your goals. Negative thoughts, negative energies, negative people, need to be sent to the bin.

6. Turn a (-) into a (+). Ask yourself how you can do that. Then do it. =success.

7. No need to reveal the challenges, goals or change. The only person that needs to know is YOU.

Snowden

I said man, can you help me out? Bring me back to love Bring me back to life. Oh why should I care? I said how, could you keep me out? Without a wish to share.
So without a doubt. Oh then why should I care?

"Snowden" is one of my all time favorite songs by the Doves. Followed by "There Goes the Fear". I so used to have a crush on the Doves. (okay, I still kinda do.) I discovered their unique sound back in College. Each time I hear any of their songs, it takes me back to that time in my life. Their music is dreamy, soothing, and wispy. I guess they fall into that "Whisper" Rock category. Good news is they are finishing up their fourth album. Their last album Some Cities came out three years ago. Awesomeness. Come to think of it, all of their albums fail to disappoint.

Just recently my Husband came back from Lahore. He bought the most decadent Mithai (South Asian Sweets) for our families. The Nirala Mithai Tin cover was adorned with Mughal Art. So they aren't a brand spanking new band, been around for a few years now; but are new to me.  I just discovered the the Cinematics, and I must say they possess all the 'atics: theatrics, dramatics, and fantastic. I wouldn't say they are downright emo (that's a scary word these days) but they do have a moody edge. Kind of like Bravery. Scotland has been producing some great acts--first the Cocteau Twins, then Franz Ferdinand and now..the Cinematics.

Ear Candy: "Viva La Vida" Coldplay

Live Life.

This is for all the Coldplay fans out there. As you know a few weeks ago Coldplay sent out single, "Violet Hill" mp3 to their fans via their website for gratis. Coldplay is generous. Thank You! They are visiting Texas in November, can hardly wait.

Everlast is back! His controversial song, "Letters Home from the Garden of Stone"

American-Muslim artist Everlast is back from the basement with a poignant, controversial, and powerful song; "Letters Home from the Garden of Stone"  from his forthcoming album, "Love, War, and the Ghost of Whitey Ford".

Everlast is one of those artists that always finds a way to relay a meaningful message through his music. He is taking a huge step towards a kind of artistic-political dissent with this song.(in my opinion) Since the song is so new, it's hard to find the accurate lyrics online, one must listen to it-to really reach the meaning. It's a song I think our ipod generation will remember 30 years from now. These are indeed interesting times; socialmedia, music, movies, books- are all reflective of our need to voice our opinions about the War we are engaged in. Whatever side of the issue you stand, there is no denying the real cost of war; Human lives, fallen heroes, displaced families, etc. :(

 

All I can say is, Peace is making a Popular Comeback. Now more than ever.

Ear Candy: Music to dive into. 14 Mermaid Inspired Songs. Take a Listen.

Music is my constant companion. It draws out emotions in me when I need it the most; when this Deep Sea Creature is seeking inspiration. My writing, my work, my work-out is cradled by music. Whether its post-punk on the treadmill, electro-clash when I am cooking, melancholic tunes when I am writing or even good old rock when I feeling the torque on my drive. Music is yet another addiction of mine.

French Connection to California: Ear Candy

Going back home to Cali. "Wait, did she say home to California?" Yes, I did. Home is where the heart is, where you feel the most connection, a current of sorts, an energy that reels you in. I can go back every month, until I permanently move one day. This time, I am taking my sister Zaiba with me, to spend some quality time along the Pacific Ocean. Why not retreat after such a crazy few months of stress [the good and the not so good kind]?

ear snack: God Bless and Goodbye

Believe it or not, while on my hiatus, I found some much needed time to reflect. I guess turning 30 in less than a month is scary and exciting at the same time. No longer can I dwindle in the 20 something state. It is definitely time to clean house and clear the mind. One thing on my list of things to do prepare me for future years, is to release toxic bonds and friendships. Release all things negative and insincere.

[plan on reading a whole post on my birthday, Sept. 15th]

Morcheeba's song, "God bless and Goodbye" although a song about your typical romantic epiphany,  can cover what I felt for the once toxic people in my life.

my TOP 10 LIST. are you ready?

Hey all...i have been engulfed in some kick ass music this past few months..shall we begin?
my music taste ranges from emo to electrosynth pop..so this list should cover some of my personal favorites..if you feel like commenting...or adding your input..be at home! :D

1. New Order's: Waiting for the Siren's Call:  YES I KNOW  it's a year old now. but believe it or not, i just got done fully listening to it and i am lusting on Dracula's Castle, Jet Stream and Krafty. It makes me want to go back and be hopelessly in love and depressed.. so beautiful!

Classic New Order. I think each time New Order has come back, whether it was "Get Ready"  or now, "Waiting for the Siren's Call", they have never lost that NO edge and melconcholic club dub line. I just want to rave. Check this CD out if you can, in case you haven't!  Grade A

2. Goldfrapp: We Are Glitter: OK. Hands down SEXXY. I am an oldschool Goldfrapp, Tracy Thorne and Lovage fan..and I thought I knew what sinful music was all about... no no no...  this  Remix Album just brings out the dominatrix  in all of us...The beats, the down tempo, the bass, very Vegas Nightclub..very drive your car and cruise to the music..very sultry and sinful a MUST HAVE! trust me, your bf/gf/partner-will thank me for it!.. Grade AA.

3. The Rapture: Pieces of People we Love:  The punkdiscoriotisemo boys in blazers do it again. The CD has a familial connection to their "Echoes" CD, but still kitchy, catchy, rocking, indie punkin beats. "Gonna Get myself into it" is the tune that accompanies me when i am trying to climb the stairclimber..Love it! Rapture, is very much like Interpol, they have that almost nasal, annoying whiny voice..you either love them or don't. Creativity!
Grade B with a litte Cherry on top. Worth the investment if you are intoa full fledge collection spinning.

4. The String Quartet: Tribute to the Killers: allright. if you haven't heard of the String Quartet, then please by all means, accredit your music dealer Mermaid. The String Quartet are exactly that. A String Quartet who do covers of all great bands. From the Beatles, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins to the Killers. I LOVE their Tribute to the Killer's Hot Fuss Album- in particular-"Smile like you mean it". ! It makes me want to go and drive on the pacific highway reciting film dialogue in black and white..just moving! Really, lift that rock and check them out! at least visit the amazon link provided! GRADE A

Now that was music I have had a chance to listen to and review...and here's the list of music, i have still sitting around waiting for me to slide them in, upload them and synch 'em. these guys had to wait a little longer than usual bc they are competing with the above mentioned CDs. I have just scanned through these guys...so no  in depth review yet.

5. Kasabian: Empire. this is what Revolution sounds like. if it was pale, had bad teeth and wore french coats. no really. love Kasabian. they are coming to Dallas soon too.Really I want to go walk in the fog somewhere head banging and breaking in my new tennies on the cobblestone. I want some fish and chips. They are brit right?  Dont worry guys, mama will get to you. Sophmoric.

6. Beck: The Information: C'mon now. If you are class of '94, '95' or '96 then you remember and still have a baby crush on Beck. You know the 'Loser" who made it big with his Odelaying and absurd Song lyrics.I didnt really care for his last cd, Guero. but i still  Heart Beck. His music is code. its code for smart, intellectual elitist snobs. I like that this new cd of his has caught onto the information virus that Coldplay and Radiohead have had for a while. Almost a hint of Kraftwerk ,but all Beck.
Check check check it out. He's the biggest. Loser and I love him. Now, as soon as i get a chance im diving in.

7. The Killers: Sam's town. Okay. i will stop. they could not top Hot Fuss. I saw the Killers a total of 4 times live. thanks to my buds Sarah and Crystal. and each time, i could feel morrissey, joydivision and cure..but no...sadly not with this cd..but you know what? because i spent 2003 and 2004 fantasizing about them, i might as well give it a try no? I bought it. These guys make eyeliner sexxy. They make me wanna gamble. oh who am i kidding. I love them. and im  sure when i start paying them a little more attention they will behave.

8. John Legend: Once Again :
OUT ON OCT. 31ST.

can't wait..Legend is what I will grow old with. listen to him while having dinner or belting out soul tunes in my car at night time..love John Legend. CAN'T hardly wait!

9. DEFTONES: Saturday Night Wrist: man, i have been waiting for them to resurrect. I mean how can I forget my college days jamming to the Deftones. White Pony-- One of my all time faves.

OUT ON OCTOBER 31ST. dont worry. I will be there with my ligther and concert tee.

10. EDITORS: The Backroom: Editors are like all my suprise bands. The Pleased, the Hot hot heat,The Delays, Futureheads and Editors, all came to me by suprise. Either by opening gigs for major headliners or underground music trades. hehe!  My friend Robbie made a CD of their track  "MUNICH" last year for my birthday and eversince i have been pining for their album to come home with me. I so want to pick them up.
really, they sound like Interpol and bravery, but so much more mature. oxford-ish even.

OUT ON OCTOBER 31st. they are worth researching. I know you will likey.

there you have it. my top 10 list. gosh. how much time did i spend composing this?..as long as you all appreciate it...then thats all that matters.

i guess i get too excited..or eager to post. wierd hunh? considering i have only 2 commenters [ faithful sara and omer]  and a handful of readers [i mean regular readers-not voyeaurs] i could be a little bit more responsible--oh well.
i really dont have any guidelines i follow...grammar is out the window, so is spelling, and curse words--well that just wouldn't be ladylike.

the G.Barkley song is freakin everywhere...you know: "CRAZY" and i was wondering...i have heard that song before...i mean before it came out...and then i confused it with Seal's song "CRAZY"....both bald sessy black men...both british?

the songs are very similar. why not just revive the 90s. why not? ppl love the 80s, the 70s..why not the 90s? something to ponder.. okay i have some 90s music i dont mind listening to:

madonna- "erotic erotic.." or "vogue, let your body move to the music"
pearl jam,  hell all of seatle grunge...c'mon now! alice in chain's, "im a man in the box, buried in my own shit?"
or
c&c music factory's, "everybody dance now!"..ton loc and his funky cold...fill in the blanks.

gosh-- i am so wasting time. this is so not good.  i will post again.
