One of the many things I love about Texas and particularly Dallas, is the State Fair of Texas. It's Texas size makes all the other fairs blush. I am so happy Oprah decided to showcase the Fair. Texas is finally getting the attention it deserves. Even though I live in California now, Texas has a very special place in my heart. I have 27 years of Texas memories. With all the negative stereotypes of Texans and Texas out there, I feel it's necessary to share the positive and uniquely wonderful things about the Lone Star State.
We don't all have southern accents. I can switch it on-when called for.
We are not all Republicans (For real, I can attest to that.)
We are home to Technology, Medical Research and Oil/Energy industry. (MD Anderson, KBR, Verizon; to name a few. (Don't work in the Corporate world!)
Women don't have pageant hair. Yes, you will see some faux tans; but no bouffants.
We are a social group. The Arts & Entertainment is thriving in Texas. Listen up LA; Texas has bred some A-listers in Music and Film. (Beyonce, Wes Anderson, Southern Backtones to name a few) Austin is a hot zone for Rock and Roll, Deep Ellum in Dallas can produce some hot groups, and I miss the Continental Club in Houston; where any given weekend you had amazing Blues, oldies, swing, to good 'ol rock and roll cover bands.
Let's not forget the food. We have our own eclectic cuisine in Texas. Depending on the region; you can get Migas, BBQ, Seafood and of course all the diverse ethnic cuisine from Vietnamese, Turkish, South Asian, to wonderful Vegan/Vegetarian restaurants. I don't think I have ever really had a bad restaurant experience. Texans love full flavored food and are not ashamed of flaunting it. Oh and a slew of coffee shops that will have you hooked. Agora and Brasil's in Houston are my top favorites for those looking for the authentic coffee shop culture. Spent some of the best years of my writing soaking in the java there.
The Lone Star truly rocks out.
For the Love of Texas-to be continued...
